Purchasing a New Garage Door Frequently Asked Questions

My Experience By Mark Miller

I want to preface this section by saying that my answers here are my opinion and are solely based on my experience and I do not consider myself a garage door salesman. I am a garage door installer.

All garage doors and garage door openers install the same way and because of this,  installation time is going to be approximately the same regardless of the brand you choose to buy. Since the labor time is about the same, the labor fee added to each door installation will be roughly equal on all standard garage doors and openers.

My company’s strict policy is to be completely neutral when providing information on garage doors. Thus, we never recommend a particular brand because we will make more money. Our foremost concern is you are happy with your purchase and will continue to be satisfied for the lifetime of the product.

Frequent questions customers ask

  2. Do I need an insulated garage door?
  3. How much is a garage door opener?

How much does a garage door cost?

The lowest price I have heard (from a competitor’s tv/radio ads) is $399. This price is generally for a single car garage door while garage doors for two car garages start near $500 and can go up to several thousand dollars. There is much to consider and more questions that need to be asked and answered.

Do you need an insulated door?

You do not NEED an insulated door but that is the simple answer. A door with no insulation will operate just as well as one with insulation however, you may want insulation in your door  as there are some benefits.

Insulated doors can be higher quality, and may offer sound proofing and sound deadening that non insulated doors do not. Sometimes insulated garage doors operate more quietly than non-insulated doors. Non insulated doors absorb and distribute a considerable amount of heat from the sun. An insulated garage door can also help keep the garage cooler, if your garage gets direct sunlight during the day. Think of your garage door as a 16 foot heat shield.

If any of these issues are a concern you should consider an insulated door. Do your homework and get a good quality door.  A quality insulated door may run between $1200-$1800.

How much is a garage door opener?

Garage door openers normally range in price from $275 to $750 depending on the make and model of the machine you want. See our Article Garage Door Openers, for more information.
